Azumi is about as cool as a samurai film can get. The fact that it was directed by Ryûhei Kitamura, who also brought you Versus (you DID see that, right?) should give you a good idea of how over the top this movie is. It just builds and builds and gives you very few seconds to catch your breath, in between all the glorious brutalities.
And for once, there's actually a decent story attached to all the violence as well.
Stylized like a cutscene from a Final Fantasy game, the proportionally low budget film, looks slicker than any Hollywood blockbuster.
