Riget (1994 - 1997)

Lars von Trier has had one hell of a career.

Riget was one of his very first creations, and it may be the one which first hinted of him being one of our time's greatest directors.

Like a movie trailer from the 60s, Riget contains drama, action, comedy, suspense and sex, in a perfect mixture that always keeps the viewer on the edge of his seat.

The closest thing I can think of to compare it with would be Twin Peaks, with its quirky characters and mysterious plot lines.

von Trier handles each scene with masterly craftsmanship, and you can tell he enjoys playing god in the strange hospital universe, in which it is set.

Sadly a few of the leading actors died before von Trier had the chance to make the planned 3rd season, but the first two will still keep you entertained for hours on end.

  1. I am just starting to discover his work, and he really is a great director. I am keen to see Riget - it can be interesting to see the early work and how it has influenced his later work.

  3. I saw the whole thing at nighttime on a cinema in Alta (I noticed you were from Norway) :) It was a great experience, and the most frightening thing I have ever seen, as an experience :D

  4. That sounds like an awesome time. The atmosphere in Riget is truly something special, and to experience it like that must be very eerie...
